IS FOOTBALL FAIR OR UNFAIR?

#Opinion by
VÍCTOR BAZO
#BTO1D @SAFASanLuis

Nowadays, football is getting more and more popular, and almost 90% of our society have seen a football match in their lives. So, we should answer an important question: is it fair or unfair? Let’s see what I think!

On the one hand, technology has brought many benefits to us; for instance, when we talk about sports. “VAR” is a new technology which is used in almost all sports. It consists on a set of cameras spread across the playing field which are used to see in depth the tricks and make better decisions. To my mind, I think it's a great advance for football and for many sports in general.

On the other hand, It’s important to say that, even having this type of technology, we are still humans and we sometimes make mistakes, as it’s completely natural. However, technology helps us not to make many mistakes and to make football fairer.

To sum up, I reckon that football is getting fairer thanks to technology, but there will be always mistakes that benefit one of the two teams. So, we should understand that arbitration work cannot be perfect at all.

SHOULD MONEY BE SPENT ON SCIENCE?

#Opinion by
RAFAEL BUENO
#BTO1D @SAFASanLuis

Nowadays, science is extremely important in our lives, and this importance has been growing in the last few years. We all agree when we say that science is useful, but some people believe that the outlay of the government in it is very low.

On the one hand, there are many people who want the government to spend more money, because the outlay in science in Spain is not high at all. While other countries spend a lot of money to investigate, it has decreased continuously since 2010 in our country, which is something that is a bit shameful.

On the other hand, I really think that all the fault is not from the government. In our society, many people are not aware of the importance of science and they really prefer to spend money on bad TV programmes rather than in something they are not keen on.

All in all, my personal view is that we should spend more money in science just because, in the future, it will help a lot in the lives of most people as the development will be enormous. But this development will only be possible if we spend enough money.

MOBILE PHONES

#Opinion by
LOLI RAMOS
#BTO1D @SAFASanLuis

At present, mobile phones are necessary in everyone's life, but not essential. However, people don't realize they can live without them. In the current world, everybody uses them everyday, but they are not used correctly, and this aspect could be very dangerous.

Fist of all, the most important advantage of using a mobile phone is you are able to surf the Internet. Therefore, you can find a lot of information. Besides, it allows you to contact your relatives anywhere by calling them or sending messages. Mobile phones can even be used for taking photos or recording videos, so if you are keen on photography, these devices will be really useful. In addition, they provide us with different kinds of applications, such as WhatsApp, Facebook or Spotify.

On the other hand, Internet can create bullying through social networks, such as Instagram or Facebook. Mobile phones can be a danger for your life because there are people who use mobile phones when they are driving, and they can have an accident and kill you. I am willing not to use mobile phones; however, you need them to do homework essays for school, and this may cause distractions in class.

In my opinion, using mobile phones too much causes harm to your brain, but if you are responsible, you won't have any problems with this tool.

MY DISTANT FAMILY

#Opinion by
ALEJANDRA SÁNCHEZ
#BTO1B @SAFASanLuis

Pablo, Bea, Manu and Itahisa have been my friends from the moment when we arrived in Malta. We lived in the same residence for two weeks and attended the same school. So, we made friend very fast.

Our relation is very good. I have amazing distant friends who support me and help me better than the locals. I sometimes think that is because they do not have to put up with me every day. For example, Bea is from Arcos, and we live quite near, so we do not see each other as often as we want, but she is always there for me.

Even though Manu and Pablo live in Madrid, I see them more because I usually go there to visit my sister. I feel very comfortable with Pablo because he is very supportive and understanding. I can not visit Itahisa because she lives on Canary Island. Nevertheless, we talk almost every week.

In spite of the fact that we live far and we all are busy with the studies, we try to Skype once a month to catch up. Because, although we have lived together only for two weeks, I miss them a lot.

It is difficult to have a distant relationship but not impossible, because if you and he or she want to have it, it is just a matter of getting organized and keeping in touch. In my case, we always try to know something about each other.

I love them so much because I can be myself with them. They are my distant family.

DOES MONEY BRING HAPPINESS?

#Opinion by
PEDRO CRESPO
#BTO2C @SAFASanLuis

Nowadays, money is the thing that moves the world. You only have to turn on the TV to see many problems caused by money. Not just economic issues, also problems in sport, wars, and even the lack of money can lead to problems in education or scientific advances. One question that is currently being asked is if money brings happiness. In my opinion, it helps a lot to get happiness.

Even though it sounds materialistic, thanks to money we can buy those material things, like clothes, houses, cars, etc. How it’s usually said, “we become accustomed to the good things very quickly”. With money, we can live great experiences, above everything, travelling.

With money, we can not only be happy ourselves, also we can make other people happy. We can achieve this by donating money to poor people.

However, there are people with a lot of money who are not able to enjoy their fortune, like executives, bussinesmens, etc. It is a proof that money does not give all happiness.

To sum up, money gives you happiness if you know how to use it.

WHAT CAN WE DO TO SOLVE CLIMATE CHANGE?

#Opinion by J. MANUEL RUIZ #BTO2C
It is well-known that climate change is one of the greatest environmental threats the planet is facing. However, what do people do about it?

Firstly, I believe that government must impose laws to reduce pollution. For example, if public transports were cheaper or free, people wouldn’t use their own cars or motorbikes, so pollution would be reduced a lot. In addition, there should be more laws to control the emissions of toxic gases from factories. In my opinión, we have the necessary technology to make factories stop polluting.

Furthermore, I think that we should recycle more, and we have to start using renewable energy sources. These sources are more effective than nowadays’ ones, and they will help to reduce global warming.

On the whole, I think that climate change is a more serious problem than people believe, and we have to solve it from now.

SMALL TOWNS OR BIG CITIES?

#Opinion by
MARCOS APARICIO
#BTO2C @SAFASanLuis

Small town life is preferable for some people, while others prefer to live in large cities. Which of these would you prefer to live and why?

It is well-known that the majority of people would like to live in large cities, but they have to live in small towns because of their economic situation. Nevertheless, there are people that like to live in small towns.

Firstly, I believe that living in a large city is better than living in a small town, as in a large city, there are more things and places to visit, to hang out and to have fun; for example, cinemas, bowling, game centre, monuments, theme parks, etc.

Moreover, if you live in a small town, you do not have the same opportunities as if you live in a big city where you can reach the newest technologies easily. That is why big cities have more population than other cities.

All in all, I am absolutely convinced that I prefer to live in  a big city rather than in a small town because you have less difficulties to reach technology and to improve your lifestyle.

THE IMPORTANCE OF DONATING

By MARÍA ARIZA #BTO2A

One more year, Spain has surpassed the leadership number of transplants, and this is demonstrated by the latest data presented by the National Transplant Organization. We have more than twice as many donors as the average of European countries, which places us in one of the most generous countries in the world.

No matter what your age is: you can be an organ donor, helping both young and old people, always in order to improve their way of life. However, minors who make this decision must consult with their legal tutors, as they must authorize it. In addition, you must be informed of all types of donations that exist, such as kidney, liver, lung, heart, pancreas, blood ..., performing in the first place those that are scarce.

As a conclusion, we should all be aware of the satisfaction of knowing that other people’s life is being improved with this gesture.

DEATH PENALTY: YES OR NO?

By JAIME MUÑOZ #BTO2A
Nowadays, death penalty is a very controversial topic.

There are still 58 countries where this penalty remains. However, some people are against it. Personally, I believe that death row shouldn't be legal; I think that it isn't ethical considering that we shouldn't teach people not to kill by killing them.

Furthermore , it can be possible to sentence somebody to death who isn't guilty; in fact, it has already happened.

On the whole, I think everybody should have the right to live although they are criminals. If I had to make a choice, I would establish life imprisonment sentences as the biggest legal punishment, with those people alive staying in a prison for their lifetimes.
I truly believe that is the fairest thing to do.

IS CLIMATE CHANGE AS BAD AS PEOPLE SAY?

#Opinion by DANIEL VÁZQUEZ #BTO2C @safasanluis
Nowadays, the effects and the problems produced by climate change are evident. But some people doubt if it’s as dangerous as it seems to be. Let’s check some real facts to make those people open their eyes.

Firstly, there are scientific studies which show that the temperature is rising a bit more every year, and so does the level of oceans and the number of illnesses produced by the sun.

On the other hand, some animals and plants are disappearing because their ecosystems are being destroyed by the climate change. For example, the polar bear might disappear in a few years if we don’t do anything to try to stop this problem, because the poles are melting due to the rise of temperatures.

To sum up, I think that we must pay more attention to climate change, because it’s killing our planet slowly, and almost nobody seems to care about it.

CONSUMERISM

#Opinion by
ELENA MONGE

#BTO1D @SAFASanLuis

Nowadays, economic systems put within reach of people all kinds of consumer products, from the most basic to the most rare. Consume as a concept does not refer to anything evil or harmful. We can define it as the simple activity of consuming to satisfy needs or wishes.

FAO is the part of the United Nations which is responsible of the food of the world. The United Nations has given details about the number of people who die because of hunger, which are more than 35.000.000 people. In the world, there are 7.000.000.000 people, and food is made for 12.000.000.000 people. With these numbers, we realize that we throw away 5.000.000.000 aliments. These numbers grow every day, and this can not continue happening. This happens because we live in a society that only focuses on buying things we do not need in our lives. For example, more clothing, toys….

The solution to this problem is a responsible consumption, donating clothes that we can not wear, do not throwing food, and not buying more than we need. For example, do not buy the 3x2 when we really need one.

WHAT I LOVE AND HATE ABOUT THE WEATHER IN MY TOWN

BY VICTOR BAZO #BTO1D
We all hate something about the weather of our country, but at the same time, there is always something you love about your weather, though.

As far as I am concerned, it is difficult to me just to find a nice thing to say about the weather where I live. In fact, I really have to make an effort to find out something decent. At least, winters in here are not chilly at all, so it is fantastic, because there is no need to put on many clothes to go outside. During winter, I do not even catch a cold when I go out dressed in short sleeves.

On the other hand, if you ask me about what I hate, I will say I could write an entire book dedicated to it. However, I will choose one thing I do really hate. Imagine you are in July, and you are free as it is summer holidays, so you decide to watch a film at home… But It is impossible! If you do not have an air conditioner, I am totally sure it will give you a heat stroke.

EDUCATION IN OUR SOCIETY

By RAFAEL BUENO #BTO1D
Nowadays, education is highly an important point in our society. If we compare education on these days to the education there was in a close past (about sixty years before), we notice that it has changed a lot and, thankfully, it has become much better.

But everything changes if we compare it to the education in other countries. Most Spanish people are happy with their education, but is it so good?

From my point of view, the main disadvantage of our instruction is the method, which becomes extremely boring sometimes because it is not practical at all.

On the other hand, many times this abuse of theory means a better preparation for the future, and this is the reason why people from Spain are wanted in many countries.

All in all, I think that education in Spain should improve and stop being so methodic, and that way, more people will be encouraged to study.

14.3.18

HOMOSEXUAL MARRIAGE

LUCÍA RON #BTO1D
In Spain, homosexual marriage was legalized in 2005 after the Netherlands and Belgium. It was an extraordinary step forward for society in the field of culture and human rights. But even today, we are still homophobic, and we do not accept this marital bond at all.

By my part, I think that all people have to be happy, and this implies being free and equal before the law. Laws should be for everyone, and sexual orientation should not matter. If we talk about the issue of having children, it is not necessary that they are a man and a woman.

On the one hand, we have adoption of children, and on the other hand, we have assisted reproduction (in the case of women). That's why no one can make the excuse of the children to defend themselves. Marriage is civil and not something religious. Each religion then evaluates whether it accepts it or not.

Finally, I want to say that there have been older people (from ancient times) that have accepted this, so that's why, with more reason, we should do it. We all must be happy whatever we are and however we think. Remember that you only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough, so be happy and let the others also be.

The croupier was talking with the man, who bet the future of his dad. If he won, he would become wealthy. The dice came out odd, so he won. Then, the man decided to bet his whole life.

THE PAINTER
The boy loved girls with beautiful legs and leather clothes. He wanted a kind girl, but that was impossible to paint. When the painter finished, the boy took the girl out of the painting.

MEAL
I ate a talking bread once. He asked me to do it. I say ‘he’ because he was called Paul. It was delicious, but I felt so bad for him, and I made a funeral the following day.

TRAIN STATION
When the train arrived, I had already been there for one hour. People left the train, but I couldn’t see my husband. It’s been 10 years, and I’m still going to the train station, but he doesn’t come back.

THE BOY AND THE CATGIRL
The boy asked why she had cat ears. The girl answered that she was like that. After moving her tail, she asked why the boy had a pig nose. The boy got offended, but the girl was also offended.

A WEIRD CONVERSATION
Two men were talking. The first one asked what color corn was. The other man answered that it was blue. Then, the first one said: ‘You are blind’, and the second one replied: ‘You are deaf’.

THAT STRANGE FAIRY
Two fairies were talking. One said that humans were very bad. The other one liked them. The first argued that they hunted fairies, doing them horrible things. The second one agreed, but she loved that.

BREATHTAKING EXPERIENCE

MUSIC

ELENA MONGE #BTO1D
Music is everything that surrounds us. The music is rhymed verses mixed with instruments. The music can transmit emotions, and it also helps us discover unknown sensations.
Today, there are many singers and musicians. This is good because the music is culture. But, I see a big problem. This is that the music is very expensive, and there are people who can't spend money on an album, so they get it illegally.
There are many people that live from music, and the music is good all around the world. I need music for everything; for example, to cook. The music has taught that bad days can change into good days. Everything is more beautiful with music. My favourite genre is rap and Spanish pop, but I also like the latin music. Muy favourite songs now are La Bikina and El Club de Fan de Jonh Boy. The first one is a latin song, and the second one is a Spanish pop-rock song. I also like 90’s music.

TECHNOLOGY: THE USE OF SOME ELECTRONIC DEVICES

   DANIELA GARCÍA #BTO1D
Technology is making communication easier nowadays. Do you agree? In my opinion, technology was so different when we were babies. I think all things can change.Technology has improved from the origin until the present. From my point of view, it will improve much more in a near future.

Technology has achieved great things in the world, and it has made our lives have better quality and be better in our day to day. However, everything has advantages and disadvantages.

Technology makes our communication easier and faster. We can learn a lot of things. We meet new people to be more sociable, and we can also express our feelings and hobbies through our cell phones. Can you imagine a world without them or computers? Well, I can't.
These electronic devices are important to us so that we can have a better development.

On the other hand, these devices are not very good because they can make damages on people. Sometimes, children can't pay attention because they spend a long time playing games instead of doing their homework, and this is not a very good reason to use some electronic devices.

As a conclusion, I totally support this idea because our society needs them to advance. I think technology is our future

HAVE WE LOST THE TRUE MEANING OF CHRISTMAS?

BY ALFONSO GCÍA. #BTO1D
Many people today firmly believe that we haven’t lost the true meaning of Christmas, while others hold on opposing view, starting that children only think about their gifts. So who is right? Christmas starting earlier every year, children only thinking about their gifts and Christmas from a religious point of view are all important factors to bear in mind before drawing a conclusion on this rather controversial topic.

Firstly, let’s look at Christmas starting earlier every year, which is true. Christmas is a good business for shopping centers, because the purchase level increases a lot at Christmas. People can´t stop buying unnecessary things at Christmas. However, financial gain is the main reason for Christmas starting earlier every year.

Before making up our minds, we should also consider the fact that children only think about their gifts. Some parents get used to children having a lot of presents at Christmas. This is another problem with Christmas. People associate Christmas with gifts. This is the worst side of Christmas.

Our final point of contention is raised by a supposed true meaning of Christmas. I think, Christmas is a celebration to be with your family and have a good time.

IS OBESITY A SOCIAL PROBLEM NOWADAYS?

BY SONIA AGUILAR #BTO2C
Being with obesity is a health problem which consists in having too much weight and being too fat.

On the one hand, obesity is sometimes caused by a birth problem, and people can't do any other thing than going out to walk and having a healthy diet. On the other hand, obesity is a problem because people don't do any sport and eat junk food; although if they want, they could lose weight with some effort, patience and dedication.

Also, obesity nowadays is really present in children. A few years ago, children usually spent their time playing with their friends on the street or something like that. But now, most of them spend all the time sitting in front of the screen of a computer, a mobile phone, the television, etc; and they love fast food and hate vegetables.

To sum up, I think that everybody should have a healthy diet with all kind of food and practice some sport or go to the gym. Futhermore, adult people should make their children aware about this problem, too.

2.3.18

DESTROYING OUR SOURCE OF LIFE

BY PILAR MORENO #BTO2C
Only 3% of the water in our planet is potable. Knowing this, people should treat it as if it was a treasure. But instead of that, they pour hundreds of chemicals into it every day, making it toxic, not just for humans but also for animals, specially fishes.

From my point of view, one of the biggest issues is the excessive amount of toxic materials factories throw into the water, not caring about how harmful that can be.  Because of this, we are starting to see the water of the rivers in big cities is turning black, and losing all the animals that live in it.
However, the water isn't polluted just  because of this. We use a lot of potable water at our houses when it isn't really necessary; for example, when we water our plants, or when we wash the dishes.

In conclusion, we should be careful with the use we give to potable water and try not to pollute it as much as we do. Keep in mind little things can make big changes, so start saving water at home!

STUDYING IN OTHER COUNTRIES

BY JOTA PÉREZ #BTO2C
These days, studying in other countries is very popular among university student. Some people say that studying outside is ridiculous when, in your country, there are very good universities. However, there is a big list of good reasons that makes you change your opinion.

In the first place, you can learn a new language more fluently than in a classroom. Secondly, you will make new friends from different parts of the world. In addition, you will know new cultures that will have something to bring you. Finally, you can improve your possibility to obtain an education with an excellence reputation. In countries, such as Germany and Finland, the priority is the quality of the education. Then, you will become irresistible to any company.

All in all, there are several good reasons to study outside. In conclusion, you could break with the routine that you have in your life; you will know people; you will become independent, and you could get your own salary. This makes studying abroad a complete adventure and a good experience for your life.

ARE CEOs PAID TOO MUCH?

BY VÍCTOR MORENO #BTO2C
As some people may say ‘money makes the world go round’, it seems a little paradoxical that, while some countries keep developing at a very high speed and aiming to become global superpowers, there are others that strive just to obtain the necessary goods to survive. A reason for this is because society allows big companies to pay millionaire salaries to their CEOs. I believe they are paid too much and I will give some reasons to explain my point of view.

It is well known that there’s a minimum amount of money that a worker must earn as the law says so, but there’s not such a thing as ‘maximum wage’. Therefore, setting some boundaries to the salaries of the CEOs is a great measure to ensure more equality in remuneration. For example, a CEO’s payment can only be 20 times higher than the salary of those who earn the less in that company. In that way, if the chairman wants to raise his salary, he would have to raise the other workers’ wages first. Furthermore, other legal procedures, such as increasing taxes to the rich people, are being considered by governments from First-World countries; so the different nations can use this money to make the world a fairer place.

In order to create a more equal society, we as a community have to make sure that the enormous pay gap starts to be proportionally reduced, as it leads nowhere but to a life of excess, and thousands more of poverty.

VIOLENCE ENCOURAGES VIOLENCE IN CHILDREN

BY JOSÉ MANUEL RUIZ #BTO2C
It is well-known that videogames use has increased over the last few years, and most children nowadays use them as a hobby. However, there are people who think that the use of certain videogames could be dangerous.

Personally, I think that children should play videogames which are appropriate for their age. For example, there are some videogames that deal with drugs, weapons, wars… That’s the kind of videogames that children mustn’t play because they are for people who are older than eighteen.

Furthermore, I think that there are a lot of parents who don’t care about their children, and they only want to keep them quiet. Consequently, if they let them play inappropriate videogames, their children could behave worse in the future.

On the whole, it’s clear to me that the use of videogames is not the problem of the violence in children, and I think that if we play it respecting the recommended age, there won’t be violence problems in children.

WHAT DO YOU PREFER A BIG CITY OR A SMALL ONE?

BY JOSÉ ANTONIO RAMOS #BTO2C

Personally, I have lived in El Puerto de Santa Maria, a small city, since I was born, so I have never experienced how it is living in a big city, such as Seville or Madrid, even though this lifestyle has always attracted me.

When I say “this lifestyle”, I mean the way of life of capital cities. Although I know it is very stressful, I love this way of stress, which I think it’s not always bad, because a stressful city means that there are always people on the streets and, at least, some good atmosphere, which I’m not very used to.

At the same time, I know that living in a big city is not always the best for example. You spend more time going to the same distance in a big city than in a small one. Another aspect is that big cities are unhealthier because it’s easier to infect with any disease and, in addition, because of the pollution.

Besides, it’s more expensive to live in, but there are also more opportunities to be successful, and this fact will help me reach my goal.

In conclusion, although living in big cities has many bad things, there are more good ones. I hope I will have any chance to live in a capital, just to try it. Who knows? Perhaps, in the future, I will live in the smallest city in the world.

IS FEMINISM IMPORTANT REALLY?

BY CARLOS CASTRO #BTO2C
Feminism is a social movement which began in the 18th  century and fights against female oppression, exploitation and domination. Contrary to what many people think, feminism’s objective is not to disregard men, but to find equality between both men and women.

In 2017, 44 women were killed in Spain due to violence against women. That is the reason why we need feminism. During history, men have ruled the world oppressing women. In fact, Spanish women voting for the first time was during the 1933 election, not so long ago, and it was possible thanks to those women who have fought against patriarchy. On the other hand, we must not forget about the ones who are still dominated. In most of Middle Eastern countries, women can’t vote, and they are even forced to marry someone they don’t love. Furthermore, men can hit women being unpunished before the law.

In conclusion, the era of women is here, and it is our duty to support it, because we all want to be respected.

HOW DOES TV INFLUENCE OUR LIFE?

BY DANIEL VÁZQUEZ, #BTO2C
Nowadays, most people spend a lot of time watching TV in their free time, because it’s an easy way to have fun. But is the TV a positive or a negative thing?

From my point of view, if we watch a lot of TV, we lose our creativity, because we keep our mind thinking on what we are watching on TV, instead of reading a book, listening to music, talking with other people… which are more productive things for training our brain and for our life in general.
What’s more, TV advertisements influence on what we buy, because some of them are so eye-catching that they make you buy the product, even if you don’t need it.
To sum up, I think that we should educate the young ones so they can use the TV properly, just an hour or a couple of hours a day. If you are watching the TV more than this, think about it because maybe you’re wasting your time.

MOBILE PHONES AT SCHOOL

BY FÁTIMA GRANJA, #BTO2C
Nowadays mobile phones have become part of our of life. We use them for everything, and we could spend hours looking at their screen, but is their use appropriate in every situation, for example at school?

Mobile phones can have great advantages and can be very useful in class. They are a huge source of any type of information. Besides, using some apps instead of the regular books can be an original and different way for students to learn something new.
Apart from that, they make communication between the teacher and the students much easier, because they can share information or documents instantly.

In these days, we can not deny that technology is everywhere, and we have to incorporate it in our daily life, even at school. In conclusion, I think that mobile phones are a good learning tool, and we shouldn’t avoid using them.

16.2.18

LIVING IN A BIG OR SMALL CITY?

BY DANIEL CABEZA, #BTO2C
Nowadays, the only purpose of the cities is getting bigger. If there are more people, it means more money for the local government. From my point of view, this could be a problem for all those citizens.

First of all, the first thing you can do is moving out to a small town, so you won’t have to put up with the massive traffic of the big cities. Even if you don’t have a car, taking the metro or the bus could stress you out.

Secondly, it increases the difficulty to find a job, or even going to any restaurant, which would be full of people, and you would have to wait for hours to get a table.

In conclusion, it is better to live in a small town because there’s no traffic, it is easier to get a job, and you won’t get anxious if you want to eat in any restaurant. It is all calmed and relaxing.

POSTAL CODE

BY MARÍA ARIZA, #BTO2A

People have to make many decisions throughout their lives. However, we can’t choose the most important, from my point of view: where to be born, since it marks our future.

Being born in Africa or in Europe, even though they are next to each other, will suppose completely different ways of living. For instance, African children  are often orphans, because with poor health many women die in childbirth, and life expectancy is also very short. In order to survive, they need to travel kilometers until they find water, which they have to carry home. Another very important issue is the low level of education. Not everyone can afford to go to schools, because it is far from their homes. Therefore, they will not be able to dedicate themselves to what they like.
However, in developed countries, babies are born in hospitals and the majority live with their families. They have a place to live and to eat; they go to schools; and they can freely decide what they will be in the future.

In conclusion, we live in an unfair world. We should have the same possibilities regardless of where we are born, so we must all fight to get it.
