Dalkey

By: Ana Guerra, 1st BTO, Section D

Dalkey is small a town in the southern County Dublin suburbs in Ireland. Dalkey has a main street with different shops, a Castle, a Church... and all the other streets are full of nice houses with great green gardens and different colour flowers. This town also has a football field, a Dart Station, two harbours that are called: Coliemore Harbour and Bullok Harbour, a big hill called: Dalkey Hill, and two parks. Coliemore Harbour is a small harbour where you can see just on front of it: Dalkey Island, which is an island where there used to be many rabbits and where there still are many goats. Many habitants from Dalkey have a boat in this harbour and take people over to the island to visit it, because over there you can find some ancient buildings. Every year, there's a beneficent competition, people swim to the island and swim back. In Bulloch Harbour there are many fishing boats, you can rent boats for the day and you can also see seals at certain times of the day. Dalkey Hill is a high hill, where there used to be a granite quarry, and where nowdays people love going for a walk and spend the day there. In Dalkey we can find two big parks: Sorento Park and Magdillion Park, which are full of grass, green trees and colourful plants.Dalkey is very visited thanks to it's island, and it's peace and calm as it isn't very busy, and you can have great acces to any important city around it, such as: Dublin, Dun Laoghaire, Black Rock or even Bray.

FINLAND

By: Javier Pachecho, 2nd BTO-B

Finland is a Nordic country situated in Northern Europe, near the Artic Circle, with borders with Sweden to the west, Russia to the east, Norway to the north and Estonia to the south. Its capital is Helsinki, a big and industrialized city in the southern part of the country, by the Baltic Sea. Other important cities of it are Tampere, Turku and Pori. It has a temperate climate, characterized by cold and severe winters and lightly warm summers. Finland has a population of about five million inhabitants, and its economy is based in manufacturing, because it has a low amount of natural resources. Two of the most known aspects of the country are the northern lights and that in the northern part of its territory, the sun doesn’t set for about two months, and after it, there is a night that lasts another two or three months. This fact is a consequence of the midnight sun. Another important place of it is the Archipielago Sea, situated in the south part of the country. It’s the biggest archipielago in the world, with about fifty thousand islands, some of them have never had a human on it. Finland is a touristic country, and one of the most beautiful countries in the world.

RED BOOK TROLLEY

As you have noticed, from a time ago a new "device" goes along the school corridor to visit the classroom offering the students and teachers reading books, magazines and newspapers in English. "Little trolley" (as it is known among non English-speaking teachers) is divided in 3 different colour levels according to difficulty: green (low/easy), yellow (intermediate/normal) and red (high/difficult). Until now, many students have borrowed a lot of books from the "Library on the Go" (its real name). We have to thank those (like Editorial Burlington Books) who helped us make this true. And you, have you tried it yet? Look at "Library on the Go" link in the menu on the right.

REGENERATION OF THE WORLD

By Félix Gallo, 2nd BTO-B
What would it happen if humanity dissappears today? Scientist, physicists, and biologists have investigated the possible facts that would take place in the earth. During two years, they have been involved in some researches all over the world, and the have proposed some possibles events. For example, after two days, the underground of New York will have several problems of floodings, because the drainage mechanisms would be desactivated. In one year, thousands of birds that die because of high-tension cables will survive. After three hundred years, cities like Houston, built on the deltas of a river, will be flooded and some cities in the north of europe will become in blocks of ice. In 100.000 years, the levels of CO2 will be the same before the human appeared, and five billion years later the sun (giant red) will expand and some planets like Mars, Venus and the Earth will be destroyed. Finally, in the eternity our radio broadcasts and TV emissions will continue travelling in the universe.

I am writing to you words to the rate of my heart,
Words that cannot reflect your immensity,
Empty but full of fascination....
I am giving you words of love that kill my life.

Beacuse you are my reason of going

You know who I am,
A person who admires your beuty

Your smile is as incredible as you,
Because of it my love I want to kiss you.
I can´t stop this emotion,
I want to know what do you fell
But I want you know
I Love You My really love.
I know that this isnt the best thing
To express my love
But I cant express it
Looking at your face,
Beacuse I remain fascinated of it.

I kown that this poem is very short,
But I have to express my love with you,
Because I cant eat,
I cant sleep
I can think
Because I cant think other thing
That you are your
I have to express it
Because I dont do this I can fall ill
I want to express all
But we dont talk a lot
But if you talk me

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY

11.2.08

Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day is a holiday that people celebrate on February 14. It is also called Saint Valentine's Day. On Valentine's Day people greet loved ones, close friends, family members, and school classmates by sending them cards called valentines. People also give candy, flowers, and other gifts to loved ones. Valentine's Day gifts often come packed in a red, heart-shaped box.
People have celebrated Valentine's Day with thoughts of love since at least the 1300s. According to an old European legend, February 14 is the day when birds pair off each year to start their new families. February 14 is called Valentine's Day because the Roman Catholic church honors two saints named Valentine on that day. Both Saint Valentines were ancient Romans of the AD 200s who died for their Christian faith.
Groups of young men and women once celebrated Valentine's Day by picking up valentines from a box. The person whose valentine was picked up would become the picker's “valentine” for a year.

Four groups compete in four different categories: coros, chirigotas, comparsas and cuartetos. The categories most followed by a lot of people are comparsas and chirigotas. TRIP TO GRANADA

By: Ana Guerra Langan, 1 Bto Section D
Two weeks ago, 52 boys and girls from 1ºBachillerato went to Granada, with Venancio, Alberto and Rosa.
The first day, we had to get up very early, because the bus was leaving at 5:30 a.m.!!!!! That meant most of the people slept during the journey. Once we arrived to Granada, we went to the Alhambra, and we all visited it. We walked around all the different places around it and after a long time we went back to the bus. It was dinner time, so we went to a Mc Donald's that we found on the way. After that, we went to the "Parque de las Ciencias" where we could see all the different experiments, and different rooms; we went in a room full of butterflies, another one where we talked about the ancient people and how they lived, and the best part of all was a room where we could all see the stars and how they move. Finally, we went to the hotel and we left all our luggage. At 20:30 we had supper. Once we finished eating, most of the people went out with the teachers, and some others, stayed in their room.
The second day, we got up very early, because we had to go to Sierra Nevada. Everybody was very tired, although we could all get our skis and snowboard boards, and use them. At the beginning it was a bit difficult for all the people that never skied before, but at the end, nearly everybody could go down a hill with them. We had dinner in a bar around there, and after that we could stay skiing, or we could just walk around the village. Around 5 everybody had to be in the bus, and something we can all remember of this day, is how three certain people arrived late to the bus and didn't bring their boots, so they had go all the way up and look for them (the women of the shop had them). We went back to the hotel, and we all had a shower!!!!!!!! We felt disgusting!!! We had supper at 20:30 again, and of course, most of the people got ready to go out that night. But that night we came back early for certain reasons, and we all went to bed.
The next morning, we all got up even earlier, and we went again to Sierra Nevada, where we had classes again, and where we had dinner in the same bar as the day before. That afternoon, most people went down many hills and mountains, and we can all remember the story of a girl that fell down to the rocks, the poor thing. Well, that day we all left our boots in the shop, and we all got in the bus, but this time, we weren't going to the hotel, this time we were going back home! We were going to stop to have something to eat, but one of the restaurants was packed and the other one was closed, so we all went with our stomach empty.
I think we all had a nice time in spite of some incidents.

SAFA History

By: Paloma Pantoja Alberni, 4th ESO, Section B

The Spanish Civil War had disastrous consequences in the whole country. In many families, the father (sometimes, even the mother), had disappeared, dead in the front, shot or become prisoners. The younger sons had to be protected by caring neighbours in order to eat, get dressed or sleep. The absence of schools, made them stay in the streets all day long.
In 1940, a young Jesuit, Rafael Villoslada Peula, thought in building an Institution that satisfied people’s necessities and, with the help of some colleagues, organized a new project. In this way, the SAFA schools were born. As an Institution whose teaching labour, always free, had the objective of promote the Christian and Social education.
There are centres in all the Andalusian Provinces. In Cádiz, we can find schools in “El Puerto de Santa María”, “Alcalá de los Gazules”, “Jerez de la Frontera”, “Chiclana” and “Cádiz”.
